Unsolved Crime Roundup

Once again, it's time to take a look at some unsolved crimes that deserve attention and justice for the victims and their families. One segment of society that has been ravaged by unsolved murders and disappearances is America's Native population. In the city of Anchorage, AK there are at least 20 unsolved homicides of Native women. Pretty unsavory for a city that has been awarded the title of "All-American City" four times. Journalist John Tepton argues that because of the way murdered and missing Native cases have been handled in the city, it is far from deserving of that honor.

Another vulnerable population that is targeted in the most brutal of crimes is children. In the state of Virginia alone, there are over 300 unsolved missing child cases. This article highlights the work being done by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and gives tips on abduction prevention. With Summer coming up and the school year ending, it's important to note that missing children cases increase during that season.

And while we're talking about populations that are especially vulnerable, we can't forget how often sex workers are targets of brutality. One murder now back in the spotlight is that of 18-year-old Desiree Michaud. Michaud was murdered in 1984 and her friends and family still hope for her killer to be caught. The Day has produced a new podcast recounting her life and death.

The family and friends of Sandra Cervone Sollie are also desperate for a resolution to her unsolved 1994 disappearance from Macedon, NY. State investigators and a private investigator who has been pursuing the case believe that the case can be solved if the right person is willing to come forward.

Another 1994 unsolved case that has family members, especially the victim's daughter, crying out for justice is the murder of Julianne Stallman in Butte, Montana. Stallman was stabbed to death in her own home and her daughter, Jennifer MacPhee, believes that her mother's murderer is someone she knew and is still residing in the community.

Judy Lord was living in an apartment with her 17-month-old son when she was strangled to death in her own home in Concord, NH. Numerous interviews were conducted and evidence was collected from the crime scene but no arrests have ever been made in the 1975 murder.

The town of Lebanon, PA is still haunted by the unsolved murder of 14-year-old Margaret Lynn “Peggy” Reber in 1968. She was found by her own mother in their apartment. While an arrest was made and a trial held, there was no conviction. Many Lebanon citizens have always believed that the police arrested the wrong man. Various prosecutors and detectives have reviewed the case and in 2009 a grand jury was convened. However, the grand jury did not indict anyone and in its report said the case is unlikely to be solved. District Attorney Dave Arnold says he hasn't given up on the case.
