Golden State Update - DeAngelo Expected to be Arraigned Today
Of course, the biggest news right now in the true crime universe is the capture of the Golden State Killer. To be honest, it was this event that finally got me to pull the trigger on writing this blog. And I would be remiss in mentioning the perpetrator without mentioning the woman who named him, Michelle McNamara. I'm sure you true crime devotees already know that, before McNamara began researching the case, the unknown perp was referred to as the Original Night Stalker, the East Area Rapist, or collectively as EARONS. Michelle's dedication to the case and her creation of the name "Golden State Killer" played a huge part in the monster's capture. I've heard amazing things about her book, I'll Be Gone In The Dark, and it's on my to-read list, for sure.
I have a feeling that, even though we now know his real name, Joseph James DeAngelo, he'll always be known and referred to as the Golden State Killer. And that we'll discover that he's linked to even more murders and rapes than those already attributed to EARONS. The Yolo County DA is currently working with the East Area Rapist task force to see if 3 unsolved Davis, CA rape cases are linked to DeAngelo. He's probably not the only DA combing through old cases this week and in the weeks to come.
Meanwhile, the Sacramento County DA, Anne Marie Schubert, has her hands full today as DeAngelo is expected to be arraigned this afternoon, 4:30 PM ET. So far, he's only been charged with the murders of Brian and Katie Maggiore, but the police have promised that more charges are forthcoming.
While we're all waiting to see how the arraignment goes, here's a roundup of stories related to the case:
Suspected 'Golden State Killer' seemed shocked by arrest, told police he had a roast in the oven
Here’s the ‘open-source’ genealogy DNA website that helped crack the Golden State Killer case
The final hours of the Golden State Killer’s final victim
Investigator Paul Holes is '100 percent sure' police have 'Golden State Killer' Holes retired just 26 days before DeAngelo's arrest!
